WikiLeaks in fresh controversy announced that they will release a public database of all verified twitter accounts of millions of people. Verified twitter accounts display a blue tick feature to indicate that twitter has verified the credentials provided by the user. The verified twitter accounts are widely used by politicians celebrities and members of the press.
Twitter handle WikiLeaks Task Force associated with WikiLeaks tweeted that its leadership is in talks about launching an online database that contains details such as relationships and finances of all verified twitter accounts.
"We are thinking of making an online database with all 'verified' twitter accounts & their family/job/financial/housing relationships," the WikiLeaks Task Force said on Twitter on Friday. In another tweet it said, "We are looking for clear discrete (father/shareholding/party membership) variables that can be put into our AI software."
WikiLeaks responded to a concern, that such a move could harm privacy and tweeted "No it is to develop a metric to understand influence networks based on proximity graphs," and proceeded to defend the idea with further tweets. But, in the evening, they have deleted the controversial tweet. Twitter safety account tweeted "posting another person's private and confidential information is a violation of the Twitter Rules." in response to WikiLeaks proposal.
WikiLeaks is yet to respond to the tweet. Earlier Wikileaks had published details of US diplomatic communications and emails from Hillary campaign chief John podesta. The emails sparked controversy during the US presidential campaign.
