Samsung retains No. 2 Position in Global Industrial R&D Spending; Volkswagen AG in Top Spot

Samsung electronics retains its No. 2 position globally for its industrial research and development spending for the third consecutive year. German automaker Volkswagen AG topped the list and Intel Corp. in the third position. The survey is carried by European Commission's Economics of Industrial Research and Innovation and showcased the results today.

The top companies include Alphabet Inc. (Parent company of Google), Microsoft, Novartis AG

South Korean major giant, LG Electronics remained in 48th position

"This year's survey shows significant worldwide rise of corporate R&D, driven by high-tech industries while revenues declined mostly due to low-tech sectors," it said.
The survey was done on top most companies which invested a huge amount in research and development and world's top 2,500 companies were dragged out. Country wise companies listed top 2,500 are shown below:


  • United States: 837
  • European Union: 590
  • Japan: 356
  • China: 327
  • Taiwan: 111
  • South Korea: 75
"Global R&D is concentrated with the top 100 global R&D investors accounting for 53.1 percent of the R&D of the whole top 2,500 and the top 50 companies accounting for 40 percent," said in a statement posted in the website.
